Massage during pregnancy helps to reduce blood pressure, improve circulation, alleviate back pain and headaches, and release tight muscles. It offers comfort, support and a sense of nurturing that we believe every mother-to-be should experience.
Lucy Sauntson, a qualified massage therapist, reflexologist and a practicing Midwife, delivers the massage treatments. To ensure comfort and safety, the massage is performed whilst lying on the side. Towels are draped over the body so that only the area being massaged is exposed, cushions and padding are used to ensure maximum comfort throughout.
As well as relaxation and stress relief, the massage is an effective remedial treatment for soothing lower back pain, relieving and preventing sciatica and for soothing away any tension and knots around the neck and shoulders. It is also great to reduce swelling in the arms and legs and prevent leg cramps and varicose veins. Massage during pregnancy can also help combat fatigue and increase blood flow bringing more oxygen to mum and baby. Grapeseed carrier oil is used for the massage which is a very gentle oil which can help tighten the skin but does not clog the pores.
It is a wonderful and very beneficial treatment to receive at a time when you’re the body is going through the many changes involved in growing and nurturing your baby. However, there can be issues that could limit or prevent a treatment and therefore a full consultation occurs before your first treatment and is reviewed before each subsequent treatment. It is recommended that you wait until you have entered your second trimester (after 12 weeks) before you receive massage.
